Obama’s Speech in Light of BLM & Protests

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Last Monday, Former President Barack Obama delivered a speech discussing his opposition to the violence that has resulted from the death of George Floyd and police brutality. Instead, he is calling for political and peaceful solutions to address the nation’s grievances about the criminal justice system.

He expressed that the killing of black men “shouldn’t be normal in 2020 America.” (P. 2). That following weekend, the country saw an escalation in protests. He goes on to explain that if we want to drive change, we must model a higher ethical code ourselves.

Since Obama is the first black president, he is in a unique position to address the racial tensions in the protests, and called for “healing, not hatred”.

While protesting and marches put a spotlight on racial injustice, change needs to be implemented into institutional practices. It is very important to elect the right officials that will advocate for change at all levels of our government.

We need to have a president, US Congress, and Justice Department that recognize the role that racism plays in our society and want to do something about it. If we want to bring about real change, protest and politics go hand-in-hand. Organizing, raising awareness, and casting ballots need to be implemented together in order to see results.

President Obama also called for Minnesota officials to bring justice in Floyd’s death:

“It falls on all of us, regardless of our race or station — including the majority of men and women in law enforcement who take pride in doing their tough job the right way, every day — to work together to create a ‘new normal’ in which the legacy of bigotry and unequal treatment no longer infects our institutions or our hearts” (P. 9).

He also quoted George Floyd’s brother:

“Let’s do this another way. Let’s stop thinking our voice don’t matter and vote. Not just for the president…educate yourself and know who you’re voting for. And that’s how we’re going to hit ’em” (P. 11).
